The Evolution of Video Codecs
Video encoding technology has been continuously evolving. The AV1 Codec
AV1 is an open-source, royalty-free video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). Members include tech giants like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, and Amazon. AV1's goal is to reduce bitrate by 20–30% compared to H.265 at the same quality.
AV1's main advantage is being royalty-free, which reduces content distribution costs. Platforms like YouTube and Netflix have already adopted AV1 at scale. AV1's disadvantage is slower encoding speed, but this is improving with the proliferation of hardware encoders.
The VVC Codec
VVC (H.266) is the next-generation video coding standard jointly developed by MPEG and ITU, with its first version completed in 2020. VVC aims to reduce bitrate by another 50% beyond H.265 while supporting new scenarios like 8K, HDR, and 360-degree video.
VVC's encoding complexity is much higher than H.265's, and software encoding is currently slow. However, VVC offers the highest compression efficiency available, making it ideal for ultra-high-definition video and large-scale content distribution.

Beyond codec advances, the streaming field has many other frontier technologies: AI-based super-resolution can enhance quality at low bitrates; low-latency live streaming is moving toward sub-second latency; and edge computing is transforming video processing and distribution.
